……….

A room full of Kildare Business people and not a word of doom of gloom to be heard! It was certainly an unusual event in these troubled economic times but for those who gathered at Hotel Keadeen in Newbridge for the IntertradeIreland seminar on Thursday 8th Sept there were lots of positive things to be heard.

Organise by local financial firm O’Kelly Sutton and the Newbridge Chamber of Commerce, the major speaker of the evening was Paddy Savage of IntertradeIreland, who address the issue of trading with Northern Ireland and in particular the availability of funds and assistance to do so.

Mr. Savage outlined the ready availability of funds, direction and mentoring to assist businesses here in the Republic to trade in the North. He explained how both Irish and UK Governments set up IntertradeIreland 10 years ago born out of the Good Friday Agreement.

Its purpose is to boost North/South economic co-operation to the mutual benefit of Northern Ireland and the Republic.
“By encouraging better use of our collective resources we help to expedite trade and business growth across the island and create an environment where it is easier to do business”, Mr. Savage noted.

He stated that over €600m worth of trade has been generated since its inception with 14,000 small and medium sized businesses benefiting across the island.

“These startling results were achieved via various IntertradeIreland programmes. Options range for the part funding of wages of sales and marketing staff, the testing of new products, research and development, to advice and sourcing venture capital. At the moment for example, there are workshops being planned to explain how best to tender for Government contracts in both jurisdictions.”

Newbridge chamber members were struck by the practical approach taken by IntertradeIreland. During the Question and Answer session which followed, Chamber President David Wright observed;
“I’ve done business with Northern Ireland since the 70’s and it’s an awful pity you weren’t around then!”

Mr Savage explain how any Kildare business owners can check to see if there are any opportunities for them to increase sales and profits by seeking new customers in Northern Ireland. He is the point of contact for all enquiries. Call – 048 30834110 email – paddysavage@intertradeireland.com
